Coude Catheters: Definition

Coude catheters are an aid to safe catheter insertion.   The Coude tip can protect against stricture, scarring and damage, and it is required for those who cannot use a straight catheter.  A Coude tip catheter is slightly tapered or curved at the tip, making it easier for some men to thread the catheter past their prostate, and more comfortable for some women to insert.  Female catheter users may use an Olive tip to allow for monitoring of catheter tip position during insertion and removal, protecting the urethra.

Coude tip catheters are indicated for male and female catheter users with narrowing of the urethra or any blockages in their urethral pathway.

Coude catheters are available from a wide variety of manufacturers.  Coude catheters are available with catheter kits, in hydrophilic varieties and in hydrophilic varieties with catheter kits.  The following are available with Coude tip: Astra Tech Lo Fric, Bard Catheters, Coloplast, Cure, Hollister, Mentor Self-Cath, Rochester and Rusch Catheters.

Coude Tip catheters are available in sizes 6FR to 24FR. FR is a measure of the catheters diameter. Intermittent catheters have universal color coding on the connector which indicates the FR diameter size.
